Localisation Flashcards
What is localisation?
The theory that specific functions/processes are localised to/can be found in specific locations in the brain.
What are different ways LOF can be measured?
MRI, fMRI, PET
What is located inside the frontal lobe and what are their jobs?
Motor cortex - movement, prefrontal cortex - executive functioning, Broca’s area - speech production
What is located inside the temporal lobe and what are their jobs?
Auditory area - auditory processing, Wernicke’s area - language comprehension, hippocampus - memory and spatial navigation
What is located inside the parietal lobe and what are their jobs?
Somatosensory cortex - touch sensation, parietal lobe - body orientation and precise movements
What is located inside the occipital lobe and what are their jobs?
Visual area - processing of visual information, distance and depth perception, recognition of objects and areas
What else is located inside the brain and what are their jobs?
Cerebellum - balance and coordination, brain stem - involuntary responses
What studies are used to support localisation?
Maguire et al (2000), Phineas Gage (Marlow, 1848), Petersen (1988)
What is a strength of localisation?
Objective and clinical = procedure can be replicated, high in reliability
What study is used as counter-evidence of localisation?
Lashley (1950)
