Heme/onc Flashcards
Lab Values
Hemoglobin women (12-16) men (14-18)
Low mean corpuscular volume indicative of iron deficiency anemia (microcytic)
Normal corpuscular volume is 27-34
Iron level Male 80-180 and hematocrit 40-54%
Hemoglobin 14-18 MCV 80-95
1:3 hemoglobin:hematocrit
Macrocyclic anemia causes
B12 deficiency (pernicious megaloblastic anemia, report neuro S/S, c/o paresthiasis) Folate deficiency (megaloblastic anemia don't report neuro S/S) Alcoholic
MCV 80-95
Iron deficiency anemia
High red cell distribution is early marker
Then low ferritin
Last low hemoglobin
Iron supplements
Only give if documented low due to side effects of overload = fatigue, joint pain, abdominal pain and arrhythmia
Anaphylaxis
S/S hypotension, lump in throat, wheezing, tachy, dizzy, weK pulse
PICA lab findings
Low MCV MCHC hemoglobin hematocrit iron
Reed-Sternberg Cells
Differentiate b/c present in Hodgkin lymphoma
Vegans
B12 deficiency because no red meat
MS
More common is those of Western Europe decent who live in temperate zones
