6 causes of anemia
A
- Deficiency of building blocks of RBC (iron, vitamin b12, folate)
- Congenital abnormality of Hb (thalassemia or sickle cell anemia)
- Abnormal production of RBC (empty bone marrow = aplastic anemia, or bone marrow filled with other elements-leukemia, lymphoma)
- Loss of RBC (bleeding)
- Decreased RBC lifespan (hemolysis)
- Chronic illness (ie. renal disease = decreased erythropoietin)
