Hematopoietic Growth Factors
-stimulate the bone marrow to synthesize the specific blood cells (elevate RBC or WBC production)
-Epoetin alfa for RBCs (can cause hypertension)
-Filgrastim for WBCs (IV over 2 - 4 hours; bone pain and leukocytosis may occur)
Oprelvekin for platelets (blurred vision, fluid retention, and cardiac dysrhythmias may occur)
Iron
-Oral: ferrous sulfate, ferrous gluconate, ferrous fumerate
-dilute with juice or water with straw, avoid teeth contact
-encourage orange juice
-avoid antacids, tea, dairy products, whole grain breads up to 1 hour after
-constipation nad GI upset may occur
-parental: iron dextran
use large bore needle (19-20 gauge)
z-track method never in deltoid
-IV is preferred over IM (give 25 mg over 5 min and observe for 15 minutes, then give the rest)
