Heating And Cooling Curves Flashcards

1
Q

What do heating curves show you?

A

The temperature of a substance as it’s in the process of being heated up. More like temperature change

What do cooling curves show you?

A

The temperature change as a substance goes through the process of cooling

Q

These graphs have flat lines. What do they represent?

A

It’s where the substance is changing state. There should be two on each graph if they give both the boiling and melting points. One flat line is for boiling point (relationship of liquid and gas) and one for melting point (relationship of liquid and solid)

Q

What happens to a substance has it gets hotter? (hint: to do with heat energy)

A

The temperature remains the same as the substance is heated. The heat energy is transferred to the substance, making it hotter as it’s heating.

Q

Does a substance get any hotter we it’s changing state? Why?

A

Or doesn’t not. Hence the flat line. That’s because the heat energy is being used up to overcome forces of attraction between particles rather than heating the substance up

Q

What happens as a substance cools?

A

Temperature will stay the same whilst substance solidifies, freezes, condenses. The heat energy is being transferred to the surrounding from the substance
