Heat Transfer Flashcards
What is heat transfer?
Heat transfer is the way heat moves
How does heat move from one object to another?
something hot to something cold
For a warm and cold substance, list whether the molecules are close or far apart.
Warm: Closer
Cold: Farther
For a warm and cold substance, list whether the molecules are fast or slow
Warm: Fast
Cold: Slow
For a warm and cold substance, list whether the amount of kinetic energy is high or low.
Warm: High
Cold: Low
Suppose you have two samples. Sample A’s temperature is 74.8, Sample B’s temperature is 89.3. Explain how energy is transferred from one substance to another.
Sample answer: This concept is called heat transfer. Sample B will transfer it’s heat to Sample A, because it has a higher temperature. This will continue until they reach thermal equilibrium, which is when both Samples have the same temperature
Name the three ways heat is transferred.
Radiation, Conduction, and Convection
What is thermal equilibrium?
Thermal equilibrium is when two objects reach the same temperature and no more heat flows between them.
Give me a definition for radiation, and an example.
Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves, like how the Sun warms your face even though you’re not touching it.
Give me a definition for conduction and an example.
Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact between materials, like when a metal spoon gets hot from sitting in a pot of boiling water.
Give me a definition for convection and an example.
Convection is the movement of heat through fluids (like air or water) by the circulation of currents, such as warm air rising and cool air sinking in a room.
