CLIMATE Flashcards
Give me two differences between climate and weather
Climate is long term and more general (over a long period of time) while weather is short term and more specific (a specific time/date)
Why do we have different climates on Earth?
Latitude, angle of sunlight, ocean currents, distance to coast/ water, mountain/ rain shadow, elevation/ altitude.
How does the angle of sunlight/ latitude affect the climate of region?
It determines the amount of heat a region might get/ solar energy, also the coldness of a region.
How do ocean currents affect the climate of a region?
It transports heat from the equator to the poles, from polar regions which affects temperature.
How does the distance to the coast/ water affect the climate of a region?
Moderates temperatures making coastal areas cooler in summer, and warmer in the winter.
How do mountains/ rain shadow affect the climate of the region?
The rain shadow blocks moist air, so one side has high precipitation and vegetation, while the LEEWARD side is dry
How does elevation/attitude affect the climate of a region?
For example on a mountain, at the top it’s low pressure, so it’s cold, cloudy, and has lots of precipitation. However, at the bottom, it’s high pressure, it’s sunny and there is good weather. So it affects the idea of weather
