Heat & Temp Keywords Flashcards
Thermometers
A thermometer is used for measuring temperature
Scales
?
Celsius scale
Andres Celsius developed the Celsius scale. He bases his scale on two properties, the boiling point and freezing point of water. Then he separated the region between these points with degrees units.
Kelvin Scale
He was known as William Thompson, he invented the Kelvin scale, another way of measuring temperature.
Absolute zero
Absolute zero is the point where particles stop moving (-273.15 degrees Celsius)
Sensor
Each type of thermometers contains a sensor -material that is affected by changes in some feature of the environment such as temperature.
Signal
?
Water boils at LOWER temperature at high altitudes. Why?
Atmospheric pressure affect the boiling point
lower atmospheric pressure -lower boiling point
For example water will boil at 100°C at sea level. On top of Mount Everest, water will boil at 69°C because of lower atmospheric pressure.
Can all thermometers measure many different types of matter?
No, different thermometers are best suited for different measurements.
Thermocouple
Looking for heat
Hunting)thermos
Bimetallic strip
Appliances
Two metals
Recording thermometer
Records air &/or water
Infrared thermogram
Weather
You cant shoot it
Solid
Rigid
fixed shape
fixed volume cannot be squashed
Liquid
Not rigid
no fixed shape
fixed volume cannot be squashed
Gas
Not rigid
no fixed shape
no fixed volume can be squashed
Four ideas of the particle theory of matter?
Pam makes space toose
P-particles
All substances are made of tiny particles
M- Motion
Particles are always in motion
S-space
All particles have space between them
T-temperature
If the temperature increases the movement of particles increases and vice versa.
When a substance warms
It’s temperature increases -its particles are moving faster. When a substance cools-it’s temperature decreases and its particles are moving more slowly
What is an Energy
what units do we use to measure energy
named after who
Energy is the measure of somethings ability to do work. In other words, the ability to cause change. Joules (J) named after James Jules. Joules (J) are the measurements of energy.
Three examples of things that use energy
Humans
Lights
Vehicles
Can energy be transferred from one object to another
Yes
Ex. a battery thats powering a flashlight
What is thermal energy
Thermal energy is the energy that comes from heat. heat is generated by the movement of tiny particles in an object.
Which way does heat energy travel from hot to cold or from cold to hot
Hot to cold
think of hot drinks the heat travels the hot drink to the cooler air
Energy is not a substance. it can be weighed. it does not take up space. energy describes the quality or condition.
Energy is a property or quality of an object or substance that gives it ability to move do work or cause changes
The law of conversation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed it can only be transformed from one form to another or passed from one object to another
