Heat And Temp. Key Words Topic 4-6 Flashcards
Expand
Expansion
A substance that grows or increases in the volume. Example marshmallows heated in the microwave
Contraction
Contract
A substance that shrinks or decreases in size or volume.
Example mountain bike tires deflate during the winter
Heat capacity
The amount of heat required to warm a cooling object by 1°. Sunlight shines down equally on the sand and water. temperature the sand and water will change quite differently
Example sand
Particle model
When the temperature increases the particles are moving faster and spreading more
higher temperature equals high movement spreading out
when the temperature decreases the particles are moving slower and getting closer together
Lower temperature equals lower movement closer together
A pure substance is a type of ……… that is made of only one kind of particle pure substances can exist as ………, …….. or ………..
Matter
Solid
liquid
gas
Do a solid expand of the same rate?
Solids can be longer or shorter depending on the temperature
average energy of the particles
Do liquids expand and contract at the same rate?
When particles are heated there average energy increases needing more room so they expand.
When particles are cooling the volume decreases or contracts because the particles need less room
Example this is demonstrated by the liquid used in a thermometer as the liquid expands and contracts and moves up and down the inside tubing of the thermometer
What is the fourth state of matter
Plasma
it is made of an extreme temperatures like those on the surface of the sun 🌞
