Heat And Temp. Topic 7-8 Flashcards
Chemical energy
Essentially stored thermal energy
When burned can produce large amounts of thermal energy
Example wood and coal
Electric energy
Can we produce many different ways
Hydroelectric dams are use the energy of falling water to produce electrical energy
has a negative impact on wildlife and their habitats
Also affects livelihood of people who work or live in the area
Example hydroelectric dams, generating stations
Mechanical energy
Forced that push or pull objects often release thermal energy FRICTION example car brakes tires bike pump skidding tires rug burn
Geothermal energy
Natural source of energy from the earth can be harnessed to produce electrical energy example volcanos hot springs and geysers
Solar energy
Energy from the sun is a clean source and will never run out these are times when it is not available night two forms active and passive
Active: use solar collects along with fan to distribute stored thermal energy usually in a liquid throughout a home or building
example solar panels
Passive: uses materials in a structure to absorb store and release
example wall of windows in a house or greenhouse
Wind
The energy of moving air
It results from convection currents through solar energy (heating and cooling air)
Example using wind turbines to produce electricity
Nuclear
Energy required to split up Adams
massive amounts of energy released
when there is a malfunction disaster can strike
Example Chernobyl
What are the problems with fossil fuels
1 they are nonrenewable resource( takes millions of years to form)
2 when burned it produces carbon dioxide which overloads our CO2 recycling systems
What is global warming
Greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide trap thermal energy above the earth causing an increase in overall temperature can change climate zones and their plant growing dry up rivers and lakes even could melt the polar ice cap
What is cogeneration
The process of using thermal pollution waste heat that accidentally warms the environment to generate electricity or heat buildings example waste heat from a factory that can be transferred to other buildings to heat and power that this requires the use of heat to heat exchanger similar to a car radiator
Why does Alberta continue to use fossil feels
There is an abundance of fossil feels in Alberta and this helps with our economy. It produces 80% of our electrical energy.
List three ways we can save money and energy at home
Turn the lights off in a room when you’re not present
LED lightbulbs versus hologan lightbulbs
Be aware of how long we are showering or using resources
What are refrigerants
Liquids that evaporate easily at low temperatures to remove thermal energy from food
What are some dangers associated with thermal energy
Fire burning ourselves
Forest fires harmful
chemicals and pollution
Drought floods etc.
What are 3 by-products of thermal energy
Sulfur dioxyde (H2S)- irritating to the eyes nose and throat especially to people with asthma
Carbon monoxide (CO2) colourless Oderless and ethal
Carbon dioxide(C02) greenhouse gas
