CAD
coronary artery disease
CHF
congestive heart failure
CVD
cardiovascular disease
CV
cardiovascular
SVT
supraventricular tachycardia
V fib
ventricular fibrillation
A fib
atrial fibrillation
V tach
ventricular tachycardia
JVD
jugular venous distention
MI
myocardial infarction
PMI
point of maximal impulse
Stenosis
the abnormal narrowing of a passage in the body
Regurgitation
backflow of blood through a defective heart valve
Insufficiency
the inability of an organ to perform its normal function
Cardiac output
the amount of blood pumped out by the ventricles within a given time (usually in L/min)
Stroke volume
the amount of blood ejected by a ventricle during contraction
Preload
the volume of blood that stretches ventricles at the end of diastole and just before systole
Afterload
the amount of resistance or pressure the ventricle needs to contract against during systole
palpitations
an unpleasant awareness of one’s heart beat - descriptions used include skipping, racing, fluttering, or pounding
edema
the accumulation of fluid in the extravascular/interstitial space
thrills
a vibration felt when palpating over an artery
Murmur
a whooshing sound that arises from blood passing through the heart
Bruits
a murmur (whoosing sound) that arises from the vasculature and not the heart. This sound is suggestive of blood turbulence through the artery because of narrowing in the vessel.
