HEART RATE Flashcards
how can you measure your heart rate? 2 examples
in the neck or the inside of your wrist. to locate the pulse rate in the wrist, lightly press your (index) first finger and middle finger just above the tendons that run into the hand and feel for a beat, count how many beats in one minute
in WELL MAINTAINED INDIVIDUALS what is the highest values i.e heart rate recorded
as high as 200 millilitres per beat
what is the overload principle?
in cardio training, if adhered to will place stress on the heart and lungs. Over time this stress will stimulate an adaption where the heart becomes more efficient at pumping blood in each beat.
what is the benefits of overload? and what increases and what decreases ?
heat becomes more efficient causing stroke volume to increase and heart rate to decrease.
what is cardiac output?
the amount of blood pumped out of the heart into the aorta from the left ventriquel in one minute
Cardiac output can vary according to the demands and needs of the body, give an example of what happens during exercise
Cardiac output must increase to meet the bodys demands for oxegen
what is the formula to determine cardiac output?
Cardiac output = stroke volume x heart rate
what is the resting heart rate of an average individual? and give an examle of cardiac output achieved i.e do the maths on this one!
stroke volume 71 ml heart rate 70 bpm
cardiac output = 71 ml x 70 bpm = 4,970 ml per minute or close to 5 litres of blood
what is the walking heart rate of an average individual? and give an example of cardiac output achieved i.e and do maths on this one!
stroke volume rises to around 95 ml and heart rate rises to 115 bpm
cardiac output = 95 ml x 115 bpm = 10,925 ml per minute or close to 11 litres
what is the stroke volume of an average individual on a low intensity run? cardiac output achieved. Do the maths on this one!
stroke volume rises to around 110 ml and heart rate rises to around 150 bpm so cardiac output = 110 ml x 150 bpm = 16,500 ml
what happens to the heart i.e adaptations in a trained athlete
heart will be stronger and more efficient enabling it to pump blood with less effort
what is the average resting stroke volume and cardiac output of a trained athlete?
resting heart rate can be as low as 40/50 bpm and stroke volume can be as low as 50/100 ml
what is the average resting heart rate of a sedentary individual and why ?
80/100 bpm and stroke volume is between 50/70 ml as the heart will have to work harder to pump a comparitivly lower volume of blood around the body
