Heart Meds Flashcards
Nitroglycerin: Action
Decreases Preload = venous dilation, decrease blood volume and pressure in the heart
Decreases workload and O2 need the heart
Decreases Afterload: decreases systolic and workload due to arterioldilation
Nitroglycerin: Routes
- SL, chew tablets, transmucosal spray
- PO sustained release tables and transdermal ointment
- IV
- Rx sudden onset angina
- Manage and prevent chronic angina but chest pain isn’t relieved
- Reduce preload and Afterload in severe heart failure, rx mi and manage angina unresponsive to the other routes, only route approved for kids
Nitroglycerin: a/e
Headache and hypotension
Patient Teaching: Nitro
If nitro doesn’t relieve pain when should I call 911?
3 SL tablets or oral sprays 5 min apart if it doesn’t relieve chest pain
Patient Teaching: Nitro
My nitro gives me headaches and makes me dizzy.

What assessment should be done pre-admin

Digoxin (Lanoxin): Rx
Heart Failure
A-Fib and flutter
Digoxin (Lanoxin): How does it treat heart failure?
Increases contractility and it’s force. Increases heart rate
Digoxin (Lanoxin): Action for Atrial Dysrithmias
Decreases ventricular contraction
Digoxin (Lanoxin): Therapeutic serum level
0.8-2.0
Digoxin (Lanoxin): A/E
Very slow or rapid ventricular rhythm
Blurred vision
Mental changes
Digoxin (Lanoxin): Pre digoxin admin assesments
Count pulse for full min
Propranolol Hydrochloride (Indernal): Class and Action
Beta blocker
Reduces frequency and severity of acute angina like attack
Propranolol Hydrochloride (Indernal): Action
Decreases cardiac workload and o2 needs of the heart
Propranolol Hydrochloride (Indernal): a/e
Edema
Slow pulse
Confusion
Depression
