heart, lymphatic, peripheral p2 Flashcards
carotoid artery
groove between trachea and sternocleidomastoid
listen before palpating
describe expected temporal and carotid arteries
smooth, non tender, 2+
how would you listen for carotid artery bilaterally
bell over angle of jaw, hold breath
should be clear, no swishing
IF YOU HEAR DO NOT PALPATE
describe the jugular vein
internal (deep not visible)
inspect with head elevated
have client turn hear away from you and shine light
describe JVD
vein budges
sign of right hear failure
arteries
oxygenated blood to heart from capillaries
causes pulses
veins
deoxygenated blood from tissue back to heart
low pressure
lymphatic system
drains excess fluid from tissue
absorbs fat in small amounts
expected for upper extremities
symmetrical, 160, elastic turgor, 2+ pulse
describe allen test
pressure on both pulses then release
blood should return to hand
epitrochlear
forearm
lymphedema
blockage of lymph node due to removal
tired, swelling, non pitting edema
care: elevate arm or leg, NO ICE OR HEAT
expected lower extremities
check femoral and popliteal pulses
if you can’t palpate use a dobler
legs should be same size if not maybe blood clot
varicose veins
enlarged/swollen
blue or purple
poor blood flow
common during pregnancy and obesity
venous stasis
blood not returning to heart
use compression stockings
risk factors of venous stasis
long period of standing still
sitting or lying down
edema in feet and ankles
peripheral artery disease
loss of hair
cool temperature
intermittent caudation: cramping muscles
testing arterial insufficiency
elevate legs and pump feet to drain venous blood
then sit up and dangle feet
abnormal: pallor and delayed return of color
6 p’s of arterial occlusion
polar
pallor
pain
paralysis
parathesis
pulseless
characteristics of venous insufficiency
bilateral
red bluish color
edema to leg
Cramping
arterial ulcers
no blood flow
tip of toes and feet
minimal drainage
very painful
base is pale
venous ulcers
ankle and lower third of leg
red to yellow color
large amount of drainage
aching pain
severe edema
