Heart gcse Flashcards
what is a stent? + their benefits and drawbacks
An expandible tube that is placed inside arteries to keep them open so blood can keep flowing
benefits= surgery is quick, last a long time
disadvantages= requires surgery, which always has risks, patient can develop blood clots near stent(thrombosis)

what is the role of valves?
to allow blood to flow in one direction
what are the problems we can get with valves?
.not enough blood can pass through because valve wont open fully (became stiff)
. blood can not close fully so blood can leak backwards
what is a pace maker and where is it located?
produce small electrical impulses which spread through the muscular walls of the heart causing them to contract
.located in the right atrium
what is an artery?
Any vessel that carries blood away from the heart(oxygenated blood from heart to body)
what is a vein?
any vessel that carries blood to the heart
How does the heart get its own oxygen to function?
Through coronary arteries, which circles the heart making sure that all the muscle tissue gets all the oxygen and nutrients that it needs.
what is a capillary?
these are involved in the exchange of materials at the tissues.
