Heart Failure Flashcards
Heart Failure
Chronic, progressive inability of the heart to function as a pump
Don’t empty during systole = —–
Don’t fill during diastole = ——
inadequate blood volume supplied to tissues
backup of blood causing systemic congestion
Cardiomyopathy -
problem of actual heart muscle itself (increase of heart size, thinning of walls, etc).
Ejection Fraction
Reflection of heart’s efficiency as a pump Guide medical treatment
55-70% = normal
<35% = severe
Left fails
first. As blood backs up in LV, it backs up in LA. Then it gets backed up in lungs, back to RV, then RA.
Dyspnea -
perceived shortness of breath - can’t breath well = left side fail.
Fatique -
exertional and skeletal muscle fatigue - these patients are usually right sided heart failure.
Orthopnea -
tend to sleep upright, can’t really lie flat.
PND -
patient startles from deep sleep with feeling that they can’t breath.
HFPPF -
Ejection fraction still OK with signs of heart failure.
LVADS
can be placed, which monitor left ventricle
Decompensated -
body feeling symptoms. Compensated is when their meds are working. Technically, classes 2, 3 and 4 are decompensated.
—- is the most common reason for going decompensated
Non compliance
LVAD may require
antibiotics
