Heart Cardiac Cycle (04) Flashcards
Systole
repetitive contraction of heart chambers, ejects blood
Diastole
relaxation of heart chambers, fill with blood,
Blood moves through circulatory system from areas of
_____ to _____ pressure
higher, lower
Phases of the Cardiac Cycle
Phase 1: Atrial Contraction (systole) - Active ventricular filling
Phase 2: Isovolumetric Contraction
Phase 3: Ventricular Ejection
Phase 4: Isovolumetric relaxation
Phase 5: Ventricular Filling (passive)
Atrial Contraction (systole) - Active ventricular filling
Semilunar valves closed
Isovolumetric Contraction
- Short duration
- No change in blood vol.
- Ventricular contraction starts
Ventricular Ejection
- Longer duration
- Strong ventricular contraction
- Blood ejection (aorta, pulm. trunk)
Isovolumetric relaxation
- Short duration, no change in blood vol.
- Valves closed
- Decrease in ventricular pressure
Ventricular Filling (passive)
- AV valves open, heart relaxed
- 70% ventricular filling
Volume changes - ventricular filling
EDV – ESV = SV (amount of blood ejected
from LV per heartbeat)
First heart sound
‘lubb’ atrioventricular valves and surrounding fluid vibrations as valves close at beginning of ventricular systole
Second heart sound
‘dupp’ results from closure of aortic and pulmonary semilunar valves at beginning of ventricular diastole
Third heart sound
(occasional) turbulent blood flow into ventricles and detected near end of first one-third of diastole or during atrial systole
