Heart And Blood Flashcards
What makes up the blood?
Water
Plasma
Platelets
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Leukocytes
They are white blood cells
Types of leukocyte
B- lymphocytes> produce anti bodies
T-lymphocytes> fight infections
Monocytes> destroy invading bacteri
Eosinophil> respond to infections and parasites
Basophil> present when allergic reaction happens
Neutrophil> destroy bacteria and fungi
White blood cells
Help body fight infections and diseases
Red blood cells function
Deliver oxygen around body
Contain haemoglobin give red colour and contain iron.
No nucleus to carry more haemoglobin
Red blood cell structure
Flattened disc to maximise space for oxygen
Small and flexible to fit through vessels
Platelets
Platelets stick together to clot blood
Fragment of cells with protein attached
Prevent infection
Plasma
Clear pale liquid
Makes up 55% of blood
Transport hormones
Layers of the heart wall
Pericardium- protective outer layer
Myocardium- middle
Endocardium-
Double circulation
4 chambered heart
Separate o2 and and deoxygenated
More o2 pumped around body
Single circulation heart
Quicker
2 chambered
Blood vessels
Arteries- blood away from
Body
Veins- blood to a heart
Capillaries- exchange nutrients,co2, glucose
Baroreceptors
Receptors in the heart that detect change in pressure in heart.
Signal to CNS.
