heart anatomy Flashcards
what are the 2 layers of the heart
fibrous pericardium
serous pericardium
this layer of the pericardium is tough, the outermost layer, prevents overdistension, and helps anchor the heart
fibrous pericardium
this layer of the pericardium is made up of the parietal and visceral layers
serous pericardium
describe the two layers of the serous pericardium
parietal: lines inside, fibrous
visceral: “epicardium”, covers heart surface
space between parietal and visceral layers
pericardial cavity
fluid in pericardial cavity, slick
pericardial fluid
describe pericarditis
inflammation causes increased fluid build up. the fibrous layers of the heart will not expand which compreses heart and leads to cardiac tamponade
cardiac tamponade: extra fluid builds up in the space around the heart. This fluid puts pressure on the heart and prevents it from pumping well.
name of cardiac muscle
myocardium
cell to cell connections
intercalated discs
electrical bridges for communication
gap junctions
“spot welds” for reinforcement bewteen cardiac cells. increase and promote structural integrity
desmosomes
innermost cardiac tissue lining, smooth, and low friction
endocardium
