HEARING part II Flashcards
oval central portion of the bony labyrinth
vestibule
vestibule contains 2 sacs:
- utricle - little bag
- saccule - little sac
*the walls of the utricle and saccule contain thickened regions called
- STATE EQUILIBRIUM
maculae
maculae contains 2 kinds of cells
- hair cells - sensory receptors
- supporting cells
the supporting cells secrete thick, gelatinous glycoprotein layer called
otolithic membrane
the otolithic membrane is covered by
otoliths
Semicircular Canals- 3 tubes/canals named based on their position
anterior
posterior
lateral
One end of each canal enlarges into
ampulla (saclike duct)
small elevation in the ampulla
cristae
receptor for DYNAMIC EQUILIBRIUM
cristae
THE AMPULLA CONTAINS’
- HAIR CELLS
- SUPPORTING CELLS: covered by cupula
a mass of gelatinous material displaced by
fluid movement within the semicircular canals
cupula
- Series of sacs and tubes found inside the bony labyrinth
- Contains the oval & round windows
inner portion/membranous labyrinth
the membranous labyrinth contains what fluid
endolymph
- it is associated with the VESTIBULE and involved in evaluating the position of
the head in relation to gravity
static equilibrium
