Hearing Loss Flashcards
how does sensorineural hearing loss happen?
damage to hair cells in cochlea or hearing nerve or both
what type of hearing loss can occur with old age?
sensorineural (damage to the cochlea)
what is the audiogram of sensorineural hearing loss?
lines close together
no gap between air and bone conduction
how does conductive hearing loss happen?
sound cannot pass to inner ear, usually due to abnormality of outer/inner ear
what is the audiogram of conductive hearing loss?
gap between air and bone (bone is normal)
how does mixed hearing loss happen?
damage in both outer/middle ear and inner ear
what is the audiogram of mixed hearing loss?
significant gap between air and bone, and bone is not always in normal ranges
what is presbycusis?
age related high frequency sensorineural hearing loss (bilateral)
what is otosclerosis?
new bone forms around stapes footplate
leads to fixation and conductive hearing loss
symptoms of otosclerosis?
hearing better with background noise
tinnitus
dizziness
what can aggravate otosclerosis?
pregnancy
how is otosclerosis treated?
hearing aid
what does tympanometry measure?
pressure in middle ear
establishes cause of conductive deafness
what does pure tone audiometry measure?
hearing loss and determines its nature
what gives a carhart notch on audiometry?
otosclerosis
