3
Q

Define the Occlusion Effect.

A

When LF sounds get trapped in the back of our throats, but HF sounds move to our mandible via BC, but turn into AC due to vibrations of low frequency sound of the cartilaginous portion of the ear canal. Since a hearing aid is present, LF sounds cannot naturally escape, so the trapped sound is reflected back to our eardrum and transmitted to our cochlea via AC. Thus enhancing the sound the person hears.

7
Q

List advantages of BTE

A
  1. It’s design, earmold, tubing, and earhook can all be used to modify frequency response of a signal
  2. Microphone port is near TM and the HA is positioned on top of the pinna so this allows for directional cues
  3. Larger sizes allow for various technologies
  4. Great for children still growing
  5. Improved durability due to separation of electronic components

They are both hard to modify

24
Q

List one con for Silicone & Vinyl

A

Silicone: Harder to insert

25
What is the benefit of a custom HAs?
Improves directionality due to Pinna Effect
26
List benefit of BTE/RIC.
1. Multiple coupling options 2. Wide fitting range 3. Rechargeable 4. Wireless compatibility
27
When would you consider BAHA
1. CHL | 2. SSD
28
When would you consider a CROS v BiCROS?
CROS: No hearing in one ear and close to perfect in the other BiCROS: No hearing in one ear and moderate HL in the other
29
What are the EM styles?
1. Skeleton 2. Full Shell 3. Half Shell 4. Semi-Skeleton 5. Canal 6. Canal Lock 7. CRos 8. Hollow Sleeve 9. Solid Sleeve 10. Shell
30
What is the purpose of EM?
1. Retain HA on the pinna 2. Provide good acoustic seal 3. Acoustically modify the signal coming from the HA
31
Which freq does venting affect?
Low
32
What are the types of Acoustic Venting Options?
1. Parallel 2. Side Branch 3. Trough 4. SAV
33
What is the goal of venting?
Allow LFs sound to leak out of the ear
34
When would we consider a Side Branch vent option?
To cut HFs
35
When would we consider Trough vent option?
For an open fitting
36
What are the venting options for RIC & BTEs?
1. Closed Domes 2. Open Domes 3. Power Domes
37
What does open domes aid in?
1. Allows for some natural noise to enter EC | 2. Allows some LFs to dissipate
38
What does closed domes aid in?
