What does a poor diet consist of?
- Too much fat and sugar
- Not enough fresh fruit and vegetables
Why did the South African Department of Health develop Food-Based Dietary Guidelines?
- because many South Africans suffer ill health because of poor diet
- and so they saw a need to teach people about good eating habits
What is the aim of the Food-Based Dietary Guidelines?
to educate people about healthy eating and promote healthy lifestyles among all South Africans
What are the Food-Based Dietary Guidelines ?

- eat a variety of foods
- be active
- make starchy foods the main part of most meals
- drink plenty of clean water
- only use a little bit of salt
- don’t eat fatty foods too often
- eat dry beans, split peas, lentils and soya regularly
- eat chicken, fish, milk, meat and eggs daily
- eat plenty of vegetables and fruit every day
- consume food and drinks containing sugar seldom and not between meals

What does ‘starchy’ mean?
a description of foods that are high in carbohydrate eg. potatoes and rice
What does it mean to eat a healthy diet?
eating a balance of foods, as per the Food-Based Dietary Guidelines
Why do you need to eat a healthy diet?
For the following things:
- growth and repair
- energy
- minerals
- vitamins
- fibre
What are milk and dairy foods a good source of ?
- Calcium (mainly)
- vitamin D
- protein
- phosphorus
- magnesium
- vitamins A, B12 and riboflavin
What calcium used for in the body?
For building and maintaining bones and teeth
What does a diet rich in dairy products do for the body?
helps to build and maintain bone mass
which in turn does the following
- for young people: strengthens their bones and minimises breakages
- for older people: protects from osteoporosis
