Healthy Active Living Flashcards
what is the definition of concussion
functional brain injury with rapid onset of short-lived impairment of neurological function that resolves spontaneously
majority of concussions are related to what
sports
What is the concern with a second concussion
Second impact syndrome = fatal diffuse cerebral swelling – rare complication from disruption of autoregulation
risk factors for prolonged sx of concussion
Younger age History multiple concussions May need to change to less risky sport/position Learning disabilities ADHD
categories of features of concussion
behavioural changes
cognitive impairment
sleep disturbance
Return to Learn protocol
- Cognitive rest (limit cognitive tasks and screen time at home)
- Increase cognitive tasks (tasks at home 15-20min at a time)
- Resume modified school attendance (start w half days or certain classes and avoid gym, music, etc; limit homework to 15-20 min blocks)
- Increase school attendance (increase to full days a sx allow)
- Return to play
REturn to play protocol
1) No activity
2) Light aerobic activity (increase HR)
3) Sport specific exercise (add movement)
4) Noncontact training drills (coordination, cognitive load)
5) Full contact practice
6) Return to play
Persistent postconcussion symptoms
Persistent headache Neck pain Balance problems/dizziness Sleep disturbances Depression/anxiety
Consequences to obesity
insulin resistance, T2DM, dyslipidemia, hypertension, OSA, fatty liver, low self-esteem, lower quality of life
What are benefits of aerobic exercise
Reduce weight
Reduce BP
Reduce early atherosclerosis, insulin resistance, T2DM, NAFLD, OSA
Improved cardiovascular fitness
Stretching , especially for those with disabilities
High impact PA for bone health
What are activity guidelines for 0-4yo
Infants – floor based tummy time several times a day
1-4 years – structured and unstructured activity 180min/day (any intensity) = play, games, transportation, recreation in a variety of environments
Screen time: None < 2y; 2-4 y = <1h/day
Reduce passive transportation in family
What are activity guidelines for 5-11yo
Screen time: max 2h/day Limit sedentary transport 60 min / day of moderate-vigerous PA Vigorous activities at least 3d/wk Muscle strengthening activities 3d/wk
Strategies to Reduce sedentary activity
Remove TV/computer from room
Avoid eating in front of TV
Replace screen time with PA
Avoid prolonged sitting, increase active transportation
Use games that promote PA
Families should mentor young children on good PA
Strategies to promote physical activity
Create an individual PA prescription
Posters in office promoting PA
Determine access to school PA, give resources for local activities
Increase incidental movement (breaks from sedentary activity, walk throughout day, take stairs)
Provide educational information in waiting rooms
CPS Active Kids, ParticipACTION
What age does CPS recommend to start allow body checking
13-14yo
