Basic timeline of Canada’s health care system
Started by Tommy Douglas -> Provinces join as the Medical Care Act -> Replaced by the Canada Health Act
Five principles of the Canada Health Act (PadAPUC)
Public administration: must be non-profit
Accessibility: Access must be provided when and where available. No discrimination
Portability: If a resident moves to another province/territory, the old one must cover until the new one can
Universality: Residents are entitled to any insured health services in their province/territory
Comprehensiveness: Health-care plans must cover all insured services in a hospital
What are some of our medical rights (provide four)
Access our records and have them private
Receive treatment that provides a reasonable degree of care
Know of any dangers/benefits of any treatment
Receive competent diagnosis and treatment
Retain control and dignity
Designate a person to make decisions if you cannot
What are some services not covered in BC?
- Cosmetic surgery that isn’t medical
- Dental services (unless in a hospital)
- Eye exams for 19-64 years
- Eyeglasses, hearing aids, and other equipment
- Prescription drugs
- Massage, chiro, etc

Differences between the Canadian and US health care systems
Canada: Funded through public funds (taxes), in a welfare state
US: Most residents are required to find their own private insurance, otherwise very expensive.
Some public insurance to medicaid (poor people) and to medicare (elder people)
