Evaluating Health Claims Flashcards
1
Q
Hierarchy of Evidence
A
- Experimental: Results of a controlled scientific experiment
- Epidemiological: Using data to examine associations between populations and disease
Clinical: Evidence gained from clinical practice
Personal: Something you experienced
Anecdotal: Something based on a story you hear
2
Q
Blind experiment (Double Blind)
A
Involves the use of placebo
Subjects do not know whether they are getting the treatment or whether they are in the control group
Neither the subject nor the experimenter know which is placebo and which is treatment
Reduces bias
3
Q
Cross-over experiment
A
In one part of the experiment a group receives the placebo and in the second part the same group received the treatment.
Eliminates the effect of individual variation.
4
Q
What are problems with scientific experimentation? What are acceptable alternatives?
A
Time and ethics
- Animal models
- Tissue culture
- Computer modelling
5
Q
How do you assess credibility of a health information?
A
What is the source? Who is saying it? What is the date? What evidence is provided Is there bias? Does it make sense?
