Cancer Flashcards
Cancer biology
Cells become genetically mutated, and these abnormal cells divide to grow uncontrollably
May be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer)
Death occurs where these cells affect a major organ to the point where its function is significantly compromised.
Types of cancer (most incidence, mortality, second for females and males)
Most incidence: skin
Most mortality: lung
Second most frequent for women: Breast
Second most frequent for men: Prostate
Skin cancer (ABCDE)
A: Asymmetry B: Border C: Color D: Diameter E: Evolving
Screening vs Testing
Screening: General examinations done on “healthy” individuals who may have the disease
Testing: Done on those who are suspected of having cancer. More specific examinations, such as biopsy which is removal of tissue that is suspected of cancerous for further testing.
Cancer Treatment
Surgical removal Chemotherapy Radiation therapy Immunotherapy Gene therapy Hormone therapy
Reducing cancer risk
Don’t smoke, avoid second-hand smoke
Reduce exposure to carcinogens (UV lights, radiation, etc)
Cancer-smart nutrition (reduce fat, BBQed foods)
Receive available vaccinations (HPV)
Get a good night sleep
Early detection through screenings
