What is a Hazard?
Something with the potential to cause harm ie injury or death
What is a risk?
The likelihood of the harm being realised.
Risk increases as severity, likelihood or number of people affected by the harm increases
What is a Risk Assessment?
Carefully evaluating potential hazards & judging if enough precautions have been to taken to minimise the risk of the harm being realised
How do you formulate at Risk Assessment?
Identify the Hazards
Identify who may be harmed & how
Evaluate Risk
Decide on appropriate controls
Record the Risk Assessment
Review & update
What is a Dynamic Risk Assessment?
Last chance to assess the risks immediately prior to or while undertaking an the task as the working environment is changing

What is Lone Working Policy?
Set of guidelines established by a organisation/firm to ensure the safety of employees while working alone
Key Factors of Rendells Lone Working Policy?
Add detailed notes to expert agent - who, where, when & contact details
Confirm details with my supervisor
Text when arrive on site & share live location
Test when back in my car or as soon as possible thereafter if no signal
If lone worker doesn’t check by agreed time, supervisor to contact them
No contact established within 15 mins contact police
If you feel in danger phone anyone in the firm & ask for Red File
What are Key aspect of Health & Safety at work Act 1974?
Umbrella Legislation
Duty to protect individuals as far as reasonably possible
Policed by HSE & Local Environment Health Officers
Info kept on an operational manual
Non-compliance is an offence
What are the the employer requirements under Sections 2 & 3 of H&S at Work Act 1974?
Duty to protect employee as far as reasonably possible
Organisations employing more than 5 staff must have a written H&S Policy Document
Must undertake, record & regularly review Risk Assessments
What are the employee Requirements under Section 7 of the H&S at Work Act 1974?
Not endanger themselves or others
To co-operate with employers
To not abuse or misuse
Must report injuries or dangerous occurrences
What happens if H&S at Work Act 1974 is not complied with?
Improvement Notice - Breach of law, timescales for remedial action, inspector checks,
Prohibition Notice - Risk of serious personal injury, takes immediate effect, could close down a business
Fine and/or imprisonment depending on severity of the breach
What is Asbestos Legislation?
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2010
Health issues associated with Asbestos?
Fibres can cause Lung related disorders, cancers & death
What are the types of Asbestos?
Brown, Blue & White (most common)
Steps to take manage/remove asbestos?
Produce an asbestos management plan
Statutory duty to manage asbestos in commercial buildings - criminal offence not to comply
Removal must be with a licensed contract
Hold asbestos register
What is ACM?
Asbestos Containing Materials
What are RIDDOR Regulations?
Employers must report & keep records of work related accidents which cause death, serious injury certain diagnosed industrial conditions
Report accidents to HSE of worker off for days or if public or non-worker is injured
Record accidents if worker is off for 3 days
No need to report accident if someone is taken to hospital as a precaution
Report accidents to HSE within 15 days
What does RIDDOR stand for?
Reporting of Injuries, Diseases, Dangerous Occurrences Regulations
What are the legal First aid requirements in your work place?
As a minimum:
Suitably stocked First Aid Kit
Appoint a person to take charge of First Aid arrangements
All employees informed of First Aid Arrangements
First Aider with valid First Aid Cert
