- The Health and Safety Executive
- National independant watchdog for work safety, health and illness.
- Acts in the public interest to reduce work related deaths and injuries by ensuring risks in the workplace are properly controlled
- Helps businesses adapt to changes in law and practice
What is a Construction Phase Health and Safety Plan?
- H&S managment document specific to the project
- Includes project details, personnel, type of work and emergency arrangements
- Identifies risks and control measures to reduce or eliminate
What is the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS)?
- Non for profit organisation which encourages contractors and their supply chain to implement best practice in:
- Respecting the commuinty
- Caring for the Environment
- Valuing the workforce

- Working from height

What are the implications of a member of public being injured by project work activites
The HSE must be notifed if the person is taken directly from the scene to hospital to receive treatment
Site managment then need to investigate the cause of the accident and take stepos to prevent a reoccurance
What is asbestos?
- Naturally occuring fibre with excellent strength and heat resistance properties
- Banned in the UK since 1999 because of associated health risks
- Control of Asbestos Regulations
What types of asbestos survey’s are available?
- Managment survey; Managing risks associated with occupation
- Demolition surevy; Required if any part of the building is being demolished or refurbished
What are the types of asbestos?
- Crocidolie (straight blue fibre, most lethal)
- Amosite (brown asbestos, 2nd most common)
- Chrysotile (long curly fibres, most common, usually white)
What does RAMS stand for
- Risk Assessment and Method Statement
- Risk Assessment: Identification of a hazard, measuring the risk, outlining methods of elimination or reduction
- Method Statement: Methodology on working practices, outlining hazards and step by step guides on executing safely
What is Suveying Safely?
- RICS guidance document setting out good practice principles for managing H&S
- Defines a safe person as behaving responsably for their own, collegaues and others health and saftey

What are the key principles of the Health and Safety at Work Act?
- General duties of the employer to employees and members of the public. Duties of emploees to each other
- Requirement to complete risk assessments
- Adequate training in reagard to H&S
- Adequate welfare provisions
- A safe working environment and management thereof
- Provision for relvent information, instruction and supervision
- ‘So as far as is reasonably practicable’
- It is an enabling act, meaning other legislation can be made without the need for passing another act
What is COSHH?
- Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
- Limit and control substances
- Provide details of emergency procedures
- Includes items such as: Chemicals, Dust, Vapours, Germs
What is RIDDOR?
- Reporting of Incidents, Diseases and Dangerous Occurences Regulations
- Duties to report serious accidents, illness or near misses such as:
- Fatalities, specified injures, 7+ day injures, injury to the public, work-caused disieses, dangerous occurences, gas-related incidents
What are the key principles of the CDM regulations?
- To ensure all stakeholders consider the H&S risks of those undertaking the works
- Places statutory duties on clients, the principal designer and contractors
- Improves safety through design, planning and management
