Define health promotion
health promotion enable people to increase control over their own health. It covers a wide range of interventions designed to benefit and protect the health and quality of life of a person by addressing and preventing the root cause of ill health.
What are the different approaches to health promotion?
Providing information, enhancing motivation, behavioural methods, health behaviour maintenance and combined programmes
Describe features of providing information as an approach to health protection
Different methods are used such as campaigns and billboards etc by public health Scotland. However while it is helpful, knowledge is not normally enough to make someone live healthier.
Describe features of enhancing motivation as an approach to health promotion
Tailored content - Cultural background, comorbidities etc.
- Framing: Gain vs loss - Loss is when risk is involved eg smears. Gain is when there is no risk associated with is eg seatbelts.
- Cognitive behavioural therapy
- Motivational thinking (explore pros and cons)
Describe features of behavioural methods to health promotion
Training - for the different types of exercise.
Reminders - Do do something positive.
Reinforcers - Rewards
Describe the health behaviour maintanence approach to health promotion
It helps prevent relapses and helps people deal with relapses in a supportive way.
Describe the combined health promotion programs as an approach
So something like slimming clubs, encourages exercise, healthy eating by exercise classes and cookery classes.
What are the health promotion targets?
Primary prevention - Targets population where disease is not present yet.
Secondary prevention - Targets risk population.
Tertiary population - Targets population with disease to reduce the impact of the disease.
Are are some of the barriers for primary prevention?
Addictions, motivation, education, social support, cultural support and it is not fun.
Name an example of a primary prevention for CV disease
Healthy eating, exercise and low stress
Name examples of secondary prevention for health promotion in cardiovascular disease
Blood pressure and cholesterol checks, and encourage cardioprotective diet (low fat)
Describe a tertiary prevention in health promotion for cardiovascular disease
Looking at a persons personality type. You want to reduce type A behaviour via stress reduction strategies, relaxation techniques and anger management
Describe personality types A and B
A - High competitiveness, high time urgency and high hostility (more likely to feel anger in hostile situations).
Type B - Low competitiveness, low time urgency and low hostility
How do you assess type A behaviour?
Structured interview or questionnaires (Framingham Type A scale)
