Define health promotion

A

health promotion enable people to increase control over their own health. It covers a wide range of interventions designed to benefit and protect the health and quality of life of a person by addressing and preventing the root cause of ill health.

A

Providing information, enhancing motivation, behavioural methods, health behaviour maintenance and combined programmes

A

Different methods are used such as campaigns and billboards etc by public health Scotland. However while it is helpful, knowledge is not normally enough to make someone live healthier.

A

Tailored content - Cultural background, comorbidities etc.

  • Framing: Gain vs loss - Loss is when risk is involved eg smears. Gain is when there is no risk associated with is eg seatbelts.
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Motivational thinking (explore pros and cons)

Reminders - Do do something positive.

Secondary prevention - Targets risk population.
Tertiary population - Targets population with disease to reduce the impact of the disease.
