What is the definition of cardiac rehabilitation?
The coordinated sum of activities required to influence the cause of cardiovascular disease
What are the patient groups involved in the cardiac rehabilitation?
Stable angina, myocardial infarction, angioplasty, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), Valve repair, congenital repairs, transplant or heart failure.
What are the physiological benefits?
Improved functional capacity and cardiovascular efficiency, reduced atherogenic and thrombotic risk factors, improvements of coronary BF, reduced myocardial ischaemia and severity of atherosclerosis and reduced risk of CV disease mortality.
What are the psychological benefits?
Reduced anxiety and depression, enhanced mood, self efficacy, restoration of self-confidence, decreased illness behaviour, increased social interaction, resumption of hobbies, sexual activity and work.
What is the difference between activity and exercise?
Exercise is Purposeful and sustained. Activity is sporadic and inconsistent.
What are the national recommendations for exercise?
At least 150mins of moderate exercise, strength activities twice a week, balance and relaxation and decreased time sitting.
List different examples of activities and exercise?
Exercise - Walking, cycling, swimming, dancing.
Activities - Stairs, housework, gardening
What are the barriers to exercise?
Bad weather, too tired, not in the mood, don’t know how to, can’t afford it, fear of recurrent cardiac event, or don’t have time.
Rehab goals should be SMART, what does this mean?
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time based
How is the initial assessment made?
- Individual assessment with cardio rehab physio. Setting goals for increasing and maintaining activity in the rehab is important to help individuals stay motivated.
