Evidence Based Medicine Flashcards
Define EBP?
Conscientious, explicit and sensible use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of a patient.
Clinical decisions should be based on?
Up-to-date, relevant and robust evidence
What is the importance of evidence based medicine?
It enhances clinical effectiveness, decision making and ensures patients are given the best, most effective treatment by doctors using the best evidence.
What are the three principles of evidence based medicine?
- High quality health care rests on objective and clinically relevant information. 2. There is a hierarchy of evidence where some types are stronger than others. 3. Scientific data alone is not a sufficient basis for making clinical decisions about individual patients.
Why is EBM essential?
It provides correct answers to questions about the effects of therapy, utility of diagnostic tests, prognosis of disease and etiology of disorders
What are some of the Cons of EBM?
- Some people believe this is something clinicians have always done. - It identifies statistically significant benefits which may be marginal in clinical practice, - It generates massive volumes of evidence and guidelines which are unmanageable. - It is the mindless application of population statistics.
What are some of the Pros of EBM?
- Formalises the old process doctors have always used. - It is only one part of the process and should not be used alone. - Produces expert judgement in a format clinicians can understand. - Doctors should determine if the EBM is applicable to patient.
How do you practice evidence based medicine?
- Create clinical question, - Search medical literature, - Find best study, - Preform critical appraisal, - Determine how it will help patient, - Evaluate results in patient.
