Health Prevention Flashcards
Primary Prevention
prevent health problem
immunization, counseling
most cost effective
Secondary Prevention
Detection of disease EARLY
asymptomatic or preclinical state
screening tests, BP, mammo, colo
Tertiary Prevention
decreasing disease induced negative outcomes
adjust therapy to avoid further complication or organ damage
can be viewed as failure of primary prevention
Active immunity
resistance in response to vaccine / antigen
characterized by antibody produced by host
FLU MMR HEP B
Passive Immunity
antibody produced in another HOST
naturally by infant from mother, artificially by administration of immune globulin or antibody containing preparation
given post exposure
TETANUS, RABIES, VARICELLA
TDAP - 3rd trimester of pregnancy to ALL moms
IMMUNIZATION IMPORTANT FACTS
Bakers yeast reaction = no hep b
Gelatin reaction = NO MMR
NEOMYCIN = NO MMR, VARICELLA, IPV
polymixin b = NO SMALL POX OR IPV
PNEUMOCOCCAL VACCINE
may have local reaction pain and redness
conjugate = PCV13, PREVNAR
polysaccharide = PPSV23, PNEUMOVAX-23
LIVE ATTENUATED VACCINE
derived from live microorganisms cultures under adverse conditions = loss of virulence but retain ability to induce immunity
MMR, VARICELLA, ZOSTER, INTRANASAL FLUMIST
ROTAVIRUS oral vaccine = young infants only, contraindicated in SCID infants
