Q

Why did Russia invade Ukraine?

A
  • The protection of the human rights of an enclave of ethnic Russians was the excuse used by Russia when it invaded Ukraine in 2014
  • The real motive in 2022 was to annex a strategically important territory (threatened by Ukraine becoming a member of NATO, to which NATO would gain access to one of Russia’s most important front doors)
  • Ukraine has been able to defend itself against Russian onslaughts with the help of Western military aid (e.g., Battle tanks from the UK, Britain and Germany)

13
Q

Why have relations between the UK and Saudi Arabia become strained?

A
  • It has been rumoured that Saudi prices received tens of millions of pounds in so-called commissions as a result of awarding arms contracts to British firms
  • Saudis are mainly Sunni Muslims: supplying arms is seen as taking sides
  • Saudi Arabia has a bad record in terms of human rights violations (free speech, women’s rights and capital punishment).

A

The Ebola outbreak in Western Africa.

17

The UN Mission for Ebola emergency response. this lead and coordinated the international responses of NGOs such as MSF

20

Multiple factors e.g., fear of reporting to the authorities that a family member had died, fatigue from following stringent conditions, denial by a hardcore of the population who were strongly resistant to the idea that they needed to change their behaviour.

21

Timor-Leste

22

A

2002

30
Q

Evaluate the UN’s intervention in East Timor?

Human rights remain a concern (the legal system deprives citizens of a fair trial, and the police are frequently accused of excessive force).
