Health Fitness Flashcards
What happens to your heart when you exercise?
DURING EXERCISE, THE HEART RATE INCREASES BECAUSE THE BODY NEEDS MORE ENERGY FROM RESPIRATION - THIS PROCESS REQUIRES OXYGEN AND GLUCOSE - BOTH OF
WHICH ARE CARRIED IN THE BLOOD. WHEN EXCITED ADRENALINE CAN BE RELEASED TO PREPARE THE BODY FOR MORE ACTIVITY - PART OF THIS WILL BE INCREASING HEART RATE TO
INCREASE OXYGEN AND GLUCOSE SUPPLY TO THE MUSCLES
things that can lead to disease in the circulatory system are
Lack of physical activity.
Poor Diet.
Stress.
Smoking.
Genetics
Why is exercising and having a healthy lifestyle good for you?
The heart is like any muscle in the body - the more you use it, the stronger it will become.
Regular exercise will strengthen the heart muscle and it will also increase the amount of energy you use - meaning less will be stored as fat.
What is bad about having a poor diet?
A diet with high levels of salt is linked to increased blood pressure - this puts more strain on the walls of arteries
A diet with high levels of fat and cholesterol - the excess fat and cholesterol can build in arteries to form plaques - these narrow the blood vessels
A diet high in sugar - the excess sugar is converted into fat by your body
How to make your diet healthier?
More chicken and fish.
Less red meat.
More veg, fibre, nuts-balanced diet.
Limit salt, sugar and fat intake as they are linked to heart attacks.
How often should you be exercising
2-3 times a week
Why is smoking bad for you
Cigarette smoke contain many chemicals linked with heart disease. These can cause heart rate to increase or make clots inside blood vessels more likely to happen. Nicotine is addictive. Tar causes clots. Chemicals will close your veins.
Why is stress bad for you
When we are stressed the body releases chemicals such as the hormone adrenaline.
These hormones can increase heart rate and can narrow our vessels.
Over time high levels of these stress hormones can make a heart attack much more likely
How to prevent stress
Relaxing activities, exercise stimulates the release of chemicals similar to morphine which can cause a type of high-produces happy endorphins
How can genetics increase your chance of heart disease
Heart disease is also linked to genetics. There is no “heart attack gene” but certain people can inherit genes that makes heart disease more likely.
What can medical professionals monitor
Heart rate
• Blood pressure
• BMI
What effect does exercise have on the coronary arteries, and why is it important?
Coronary arteries become wider and the build up of fatty deposits becomes less likely.
Also reduces the risk of heart disease

• Take little or no exercise
• Stressful lifestyle
How do you think you can help avoid heart disease?

• Eat more poultry and fish
• Eat more fresh fruit and vegetables
