What is cancer?
the uncontrolled division and growth of cells resulting in a tumour
Is a benign tumour cancerous?
no
how is growth like in a Benign tumour?
the growth is contained in one area and has not spread to other parts of the body
Is a malignant tumour cancerous?
yes
How is growth in a malignant tumour?
the growth is not contained
How do cells act in a malignant tumour?
the cells break away and travel in the blood and settle of organs and tissue to divide
how can cancer occur? (give three reasons)
-the cell cycle happens too quickly
-mitosis is uncontrolled and happens too quickly
-the cells formed by mitosis contain cancerous mutations
What are the 5 risk factors in getting cancer?
Aging, Obesity, Alcohol, Sun and UV, Tobacco
how does alcohol cause cancer?
the alcohol damages cells so signals are sent to make cells divide more, causing cancer when it is not controlled
Does the sun and UV cause cancer?
the energy from the sun penetrates the skin killing skin cells, causing cells to divide uncontrollably to replace the damaged ones
How does Tobacco cause cancer?
the harmful chemicals enter the lungs and damage DNA making it harder to repair cells, causing cancer.

What are the 4 factors of ill health?
Diseases, diet, stress and life situations
How can defects in the immune system affect a person?
it makes that person more likely
to suffer from infectious diseases
