Define health behaviour
any activity undertaken by an individual believing themselves to be healthy, for the purpose of preventing disease or detecting it at an asymptomatic stage
smoking stats
half of all smokers die because of a disease caused by their smoking half of these deaths occur when the person is young (age 35-69)
health education thoughts
most effective for discrete behaviours (vaccinating child) messages tailored to audience are most effective people often need more knowledge for changes of behaviour, particularly when addictive (eg smoking, diet)
fear arousal
behaviour change is least effective when caused by fear
incentives in health change
providing incentives is most effective eg cash for quitting smoking
peer pressure
adolescents particularly susceptible to peer pressure particularly when its from their best friend
what is the expectancy-value principle
the potential for a behaviour to occur is any situation is a function of the expectancy that the behaviour will lead to an outcome and the value of that outcome how much do you want the result of the behaviour change
health beliefs model
what is outcome efficacy
the belief of the individual that the behaviour will lead to a certain outcome
what is self efficacy
the belief of the individual that they are able to execute the behaviour required for the desired outcome

mastery experience social learning verbal persuasion or encouragement physiological arousal
theory of planned behaviour
transtheoretical (stages of change) model
relapse -> contemplation -> preparation -> action -> maintenance -> relapse etc etc etc
