Health and Wellbeing
Relates to the state of a person’s physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual existence and is characterized by an equilibrium in which the individual feels happy, capable and engaged.
Physical Health and Wellbeing
Relates to the functioning of the body and its systems, it includes the physical capacity to perform daily activities or tasks.
E.g. Healthy immune system
Social Health and Wellbeing
Relates to the ability to form meaningful and satisfying relationships with others and the ability to manage or adapt appropriately to different social situations.
Emotional Health and Wellbeing
Relates to the ability to express feelings in a positive way. It is about the positive management and expression of emotional actions and reactions as well as the ability to display resilience.
Mental Health and Wellbeing
The current state of wellbeing relating to the mind or brain and it relates to the ability to think and process information. A mentally healthy brain enables an individual to positively form opinions, make decisions and use logic.
Spiritual Health and Wellbeing
Relates to ideas, beliefs, values and ethics that arise in the minds and conscience of human beings, It includes the concepts of hope, peace, a guiding sense of meaning or value, and reflection on your place in the world. In some spiritual traditions, health may relate to organised religion, a higher power or prayer. In other practices it can relate to morals, values, a sense of purpose in life, connection or belonging.
Dynamic
Health and wellbeing is dynamic because it is constantly changing.
E.g. A person with a migraine who is experiencing poor health and wellbeing can rest and take medication that can return them to good health and wellbeing.
Subjective
Health and Wellbeing is subjective because it means different things to different people. A number of factors influence the way people view health and wellbeing such as age, fitness, body weight, social networks, income, occupation, education and culture.
E.g. One person may have had a bad experience at the dentist and it causes them stress whereas another enjoys the dentist.
Illness
Relates to how a person feels about, and experiences, disease. It is influenced by: - Pain threshold - Past experiences - Support networks
Interrelated (interrelationships)
Meaning a change in one dimension will usually cause some change in the other four.
E.g. A person with optimal health and wellbeing and adequate energy levels will be able to interact wit others and may feel good about themselves as a result (mental). They may feel connected to the world they live in which promotes spiritual health and wellbeing.
Interrelationship = physical –> social –> physical
