What is a hazard?
Anything that has the potential to cause harm
What is a risk?
The likelihood that someone may come to harm and how serious that harm could be
What ae the 6 categories of hazard you might encounter in the work place?
Physical, mechanical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, psychosocial
What is the difference dynamic and generic risk assessments?
Generic uses routine activities and well known risks whereas dynamic use active observations to account for unforeseen circumstances
What are control methods and what is the hierarchy of actions in order of most to least effective?
- Used to eliminate or reduce risk of harm
- Elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, PPE
What is the Health and Safety at Work etc Act?
- Employers have responsibility to look after employee’s welfare, create safe working environment, provide training and equipment
- Employees have a responsibility to follow health and safety guidelines, notify employers of hazards
- Protects health and safety those who might be affected by people at work
What is the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations Act?
It is employers responsibility to ensure employees exposed to risks to their health or safety are provided with suitable PPE
What is the Police Health and Safety Act?
Police officers are covered by above legislation as they are employees of their chief constable
What is Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)?
Prevention or reduction of employee’s exposure to hazardous substances
What is the Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation Act?
Regulates classification and labelling of substances all across EU countries and UK
