Health And Human Body Flashcards
Pathogen
A microorganism that causes disease to its host
There are 4 types of pathogens: viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa
How do viruses replicate and spread in the human body?
They spread by entering the body, attacking any cell that has a nucleus, they then inject their DNA into the nucleus forcing it to build copies of virus with different proteins. The volume of the amount of viruses in the cell breaks down the cell releasing all of the viruses
How do bacteria replicate and cause harm?
Bacteria reproduce through the process of binary fission and they also create powerful toxins that harm or kill cells
How do phagocytes work?
They locate the pathogens based on their antigens and they engulf and digest the pathogen
How do lymphocytes work?
They recognise the unknown antigens of the pathogen and create antibodies to match. The antibodies merge with the antigens of the pathogen to form an antibody-antigen complex. This highlights the pathogen easily for phagocytes to kill
