Ecosystems Flashcards
Population
The number of the same species coexisting in the same area
Species
Basic category of biological classification, consisting of individuals
Community
The number of different species coexisting in the same area
Decomposition
The process of dead animals being broken down into different nutrients to become something else
Detritivore
Animals that break down dead remains and waste. They eat and excrete waste
Decomposer
Microorganisms that breaks down dead remains and the waste of detritivores
Factors limiting photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide
Light intensity
Temperature

Process of Transpiration
Water is transported into the xylem which then forms a column. Then water moves to the mesophyll cells and evaporates from their surfaces and leaves the plant by diffusion through the stomata.
Translocation
the transport of dissolved sugars around a plant in the phloem
How is xylem adapted for its function
Made up of dead cells so that water can’t be stolen for its own photosynthesis
They lose their end walls to make a long continuous tube
They are supported and strengthened by a substance called lignin
How is the phloem adapted for its function
Made up of living cells
Contains sieve tubes that help with transport and it’s cytoplasm connects to other sieve tubes
Contains companion cells that provide energy to the sieve tubes
