What is a disability?
A physical or mental problem that keeps people from performing within range of “normal” human activity.
What does it mean to be impaired?
Impaired people have a deficiency in physical or mental capacity
What are the two problems with the definition of disability?
- Determination of “normal” and “deficient” is subjective.

What is ableism?
Prejudice and/or discrimination against people who have disability

What is institutional ableism?
- Barriers to education (lack of institutional support)
- Barriers to/at work (refusal to allow aides; do access evaluations)
- Attitudes toward dis/ability
What attributes does the Canadian Health care System have?
- Financed & controlled by government
- Pays providers
- Guarantees ‘equal’ access
- Allows some private care
What is a Universal Health Care System?
All citizens receive medical services paid for through taxation revenues
When was universal health coverage introduced in Canada?
- 1947 - Tommy Douglas to cover hospital costs
- 1962 - Program extended to cover physicians’ costs
- 1972 - Both extended to all of Canada
