What is Education?

What is informal education?
Informal: learning in a spontaneous, unplanned way
What is formal education?
Formal: learning in an academic setting with a planned process for conveying specific skills, knowledge, thinking
What is mass education?
Mass: free, public schooling for most of the population

What is Educational attainment?
“number of years of schooling completed or certificates and degrees earned”
What are the socialization purposes of education?
- Separating classes
- Sorting ‘smart’ & ‘dumb’ people
- Building meritocracy
- Developing ‘appropriate’ skills
What are the purposes of education?
-Develop skills/training for job market
-Allow adults to work by caring for children
-Keep children out of the job market
-Integrate into [dominant] society
(SOCIALIZE or BRAINWASH)
-Create well-rounded citizens
What does education promote?
PROMOTE LEARNING, FREEDOM, INTEREST, CURIOSITY, EXCITEMENT, PASSION! FINDING YOURSELF!
What is tracking?
Students assigned to specific courses/programs based on test scores, grades, etc.
What is the theory of tracking?
Low grades → vocational school
High grades → University or professional program
What is Cultural capital?
all the assets (competencies, benefits, etc.) a person possesses
What are examples of Cultural capital?
- Family values education
- Family can help with school (time, education)
- Likelier to be in same social group as teachers
What is hidden curriculum?
- Lessons taught in schools that are unrelated to academic learning
- Obedience, respect for authority, conformity to norms, order, routine & regulations
