Healing By Primary And Secondary Intent Flashcards
What is healing by primary intent?
Healing of a wound that is incised, close, non-infected and sutured
What sort of healing intention would occur if the wound has disruption of basement membrane continuity but death of only small number of epithelial and connective tissue cells?
Healing by primary intention
In healing by primary intention, how much clotting and granulation tissue is there?
Minimal
What occurs in healing by primary intention?
- epidermis regenerates
- dermis undergoes fibrous repair
- sutures removed at 10days
- minimal contraction and scarring
What is healing by secondary intention?
Healing of a wound that is excisional, with tissue loss and separated wound edges, infected wounds eg infarct, ulcer, abscess
What type of healing intention would occur in an open wound?
Secondary intention
Which type of healing intention is filled with abundant granulation tissue?
Secondary- grows in from wound margins
What occurs in healing by secondary intention?
Same process as in primary intention but more so.
Considerable wound contraction
- Scab contracts when it dries and shrinks
- Myofibroblasts contract (1 week)
Substantial scar formation, new epidermis often thinner than usual
Take longer than primary intention
