Acute Inflamation- Clinical Questions Flashcards
Why would an inflamed appendix appear plumper than normal?
Oedema due to fluid exudate
What are some complications of acute appendicitis?
Peritonitis
Acidosis
Could get sepsis- if involving the kidneys there may be a risk of hyperkalamia
Infarcation,
Fistula formation
Spread of infection in blood which can result in- liver abscess, septicaemia, portal vein pyaemia and risk of portal vein thrombosis
What are the ‘lumps’ and ‘valleys’ found on the brain called?
Lumps-gyri
Valleys-sulci
What can an increased intracranial pressure lead to?
The brain herniating down the brain stem
What organism commonly causes meningitis?
Group B streptococcus (something that is screened for) Neisseria meningitis (coccus, gram negative)
What are the possible complications of meningitis?
Cerebral abscess
Subdural empyema
Cerebral thrombophlebitis
Cerebral infarction dur to obliterative endarteritis of local arteries
Disseminated intravascular coagulation (dic)
Neurological damage-hearing loss, epilepsy, learning and behaviour difficulties.
When would you perform a glass tumbler test?
To test. For blanching/non blanching rashes (blanching-goes white=venous blood is causing the rash)
What are some symptoms of meningitis?
Non blanching rash
Stiff neck
Headache
Photophobia
What is the link between gallstones and hepatic abscesses?
You get gall stones, get stuck and blocks bile draining tube-biliary obstruction=infection=liver abscess
Give some complications of galls stones and explain why they occur
Cholecystitis (inflammation of gallbladder)- stones can erode the wall- fistulas
Obstructive jaundice- bilirubin build up
Pancreatitis- inflammation of the pancreas due to impaction of a gallstone distal to the opening of pancreatic duct
Predisposing to carcinoma of the gallbladder- repeated trauma to epithelium resulting in increased epithelial turnover and increased risk of mutation
