Head Trauma Flashcards
Close Head Injury
No skull penetration
Open Head Injury
Skull penetration
Depressed Fracture
fragment of bone moves inward
Compound Fracture
Bone fragmented and brain substance exposed.
Concussion
Traumatic brain injury as a result of a blow to the head causing a temporary loss of brain function:
altered consciousness
visual disturbance
balance or equilibrium disturbance
Retrograde Amnesia
Loss of memory for events before the injury
Antrerograde Amnesia
Loss of memory after the injury
Contusion
Bruise of the brain (Traumatic)
Symptoms:
Edema (swelling)
Intracerebral bleeding
EEG:
Diffuse or focal
level of consciousness correlates with degree of EEG abnormality
Slight LOC changes= minimal EEG changes
coma= generalized delta or near ECI
Burst Suppression
Coma as a result of trauma with cerebral anoxia
Coup
Bleed occurs in the brain on the same side of the skull insult.
Contracoup
Bleed occurs in the brain on the opposite side of the skull insult.
