Clinical Neuro Flashcards
Do patients with neurofibromatosis have an increased incidence of tumors?
They have an increased incidence of acoustic neuromas as well as other intracranial and spinal tumors
Define neuroblastoma
- A malignant tumor derived from primitive gaglion cells
- mainly a childhood tumor
- the cells may partially differentiate into cells having the appearance of immature neurons.
Define Transient Ischemic Attack
Focal neurological deficit of sudden onset caused by transient ischemia and resolving within 24 hours
define hemiparesthia
loss of sensation to one side of the body
define carcinoma
a malignant tumor that arises from skin or the lining of the digestive , respiratory and urogenital systems
Define acoustic neuroma
A tumor that arises from the eigth cranial nerve and affects auditory and vestibular. often beggins in the internal auditory meatus and grows into the cerebellar pontine angie
Define hemiparesis
muscular weakness or partial paralysis to one side of the body
Define meningioma
A common slow growing, almost always benign, brain tumor that arises from the pia arachnoid cells of the meninges. tend to occur near the falx in the parasagital region and the sphenoid wing under the frontal region
Define cerebrovascular accident
A focal neurological deficit of sudden onset caused by CNS ischemia or hemorrhage
Define blastoma
A malignant tumor whose cells have undeveloped characteristics
Define glioma
The general name for a tumor that arises from the supportive tissue of the brain
may be benign or malignant
Define dysnomia
difficulty naming objects or finding the desired words
Define agnosia
Inability to recognize objects, people, sounds, shapes or smells. symptoms common to tumors of the parietal lobe
Define aphasia
A complete loss of language function (speaking, writing, or ability to understand spoken or written language
