What is hydrocephalus?
An increase of CSF in the ventricles of the brain; results in a bulging head and increased ICP
What is fetal alcohol syndrome?
Developmental delays and congenital abnormalities cause by a maternal intake of alcohol during pregnancy; results in microcephaly, flattened upper lip, and developmental/learning disabilities
What is Down syndrome (trisomy 21)?
Mutation of the genome where there’s an extra C 21 or C 14 or 15 translocates to C 21 or 22; results in microcephaly, a flat occipital bone, depressed nasal bridge, and (often) mild to significant intellectual delays
What is cretinism (congenital hypothyroidism)?
A chronic hypothyroidism from birth; results in puffy features and large tongues
*common where diets are deficient in iodine
What is craniosynostosis?

What is Parkinson’s disease?
Degenerative neurological disorder; results in a flat affect, ridig muscles and a shuffling gait
What is a cerebrovascular accident?
“Stroke.” Embolism, hemorrhage or vasospasm in the brain; results in ischemia of surrounding tissue
What is scleroderma?
Hardening of the skin first noted in the hands and face; results in limited mobility that may interfere with chewing, speaking and swallowing, among other things
What is a goitre?
Enlarged thyroid gland linked to hypo/hyperthyroidism; results in a compression of neck structures
What is myxedema?
Preorbital swelling and edema of the face, hands and feet due to severe hypothyroidism
What might swelling of the anterior cervical lymph nodes indicate?
Pharyngitis
What might swelling of the posterior cervical lymph nodes indicate?
Mononeucleosis
What might swelling of the posterior auricular lymph nodes indicate?
Otitis media
What might swelling of the supraclavicular lymph nodes indicate?
Metastatic, lung or abdominal cancers
What is thyrotoxicosis?
Hyperthyroidism
What is a bifid uvula?
Minor cleft on the posterior soft palette; appears as a double uvula
What is torus palatinus?
A bony ridge that runs through the middle of the hard palette
