Head & Neck Flashcards
What muscle closes the inferior aspect of the jaw?
Mylohyoid (mandible - hyoid bone)
Foramen caecum
apex of sulcus terminalis; remnant of the duct that forms the thyroid gland
Unilateral damage to the hypoglossal nerve presents as
protrusion of the normal side but not the affected side - tongue deviates towards the side of the lesion
Inferior alveolar nerve is a branch of
Mandibular (V3)
Superior alveolar nerve is a branch of
Maxillary (V2)
The duct of the parotid gland passes
anterior to the masseter
The duct of the parotid gland opens into
the vestibule between the lip and the gum at the upper 2nd molar
What are the 3 salivary glands?
parotid, sublingual, and submandibular
What is the position of the submandibular gland?
Wraps around the free lateral edge of the mylohyoid muscle
Where does the duct of the submandibular gland travel?
From the superior internal portion into a papilla lateral to the frenulum
Where is the sublingual gland?
lateral to the tongue in the floor of the mouth under the mucosa
Where does the sublingual gland open to?
Mucosa of the floor of the mouth lateral to the tongue
Where does the palatine tonsil sit?
Between the palatoglossal and palatopharyngeal arches on the lateral wall of the oropharynx
What is the function of the soft palate?
Closes off the nose during swallowing, coughing, and suction (elevation); seals off the oral cavity (depression) to allow breathing while chewing
The soft palate is attached to
the horizontal plate of the palatine bone
