Q

Path of facial nerve

A
  1. Medulla
  2. Emerges between pons and medulla
  3. Travel in internal auditory canal
  4. Exits internal auditory canal and geniculate ganglion in the middle ear
  5. Transverse the length of the temporal bone giving off 3 branches: greater superficial petrosal, nerve to the stapedius and corda tympani
  6. Exits temporal bone via stylomastoid foramen and runs into the parotid gland
  7. Gives of muscle to belly of digastric and stylohyoid before dividing into 5 motor branches: temporal, zygomatic, buccal, mandibular and cervical

Q

Different types of neck fascia

A

Superficial - platysma
Investing - complelty surround neck and encloses SCM and trapezius
Pre-vertebral: surrounds vertebral column and associated muscles
Pre-tracheal: surrounds trachea, oesophagus and thyroid
Carotid sheath: surround internal carotid, internal jugular and CNX
